When you advertise a product that does not belong to you and make affiliate marketing commissions doing so, then that is what an affiliate really is all about. You don’t have to create our own product or deal with refunds or any customer service issues. Your primary job is to market the product and increase your affiliate earnings.

However, to be a good affiliate marketer or super affiliate as some may call it, there are certain things that you need to know about marketing and promotion. There are blueprints and specific methods to follow.

Don’t try to do too much – too soon. If you are a beginner, it is quite normal for you to want to just jump right in head first, but take your time. If you don’t, then things will seem overwhelming and that might prompt you to quit sooner. As soon as you get a knack of it, you can then start to add other online affiliate programs to your portfolio in order to earn more affiliate marketing commissions.

Do the more complex work first. Your affiliate earnings may happen in as little as 24 hours if you know what to do, but if you are newbie, it may not. You have to work hard at it and follow proven methods that have already worked for others.

Be open to some small investment. You don’t really have to spend a lot of money to become an affiliate marketer. I get up in the mornings with excitement to start the day and to check on my affiliate earning for the day before. I also look forward to the work ahead because I know it will be fun for me and I will make more money doing it. First off, they’re not much like Commission Junction or Clickbank (which is not to say I don’t enjoy those networks as well). Its just that there’s a personal touch and a sense of exclusivity about them that makes them seem a bit special. Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to go through a mini-interview process to get my publisher application approved, but it always makes me feel better about the network when they require this. Mistakes to Avoid as an Affiliate

Making money online as an affiliate is a great way to increase your monthly earnings. If you already have a web site up and running you should start with doing some research on who your visitors are. If you don’t know this you won’t be able to match the content on your site with an affiliate program. At least not in a successful manner. The affiliate program you choose to promote should have quality products or if not your referrals will feel cheated and not buy anything nor visit your site again. There are a few classic mistakes people tend to do in affiliate marketing which we will present in this blog post.

Who Visits Your Web Site?

It is often said that affiliate marketing is an extremely easy way to make money and this is perhaps not entirely true. While it’s a great opportunity to make money it still takes some effort. You can’t just put up any ad on your site and expect to become a millionaire. The first thing you should do is to find out who visits your website. If you compare the average age and interests of your visitors with the content on your page you’ll be able to find out what makes them visit your site.

If you know your visitors the next step will be easier: knowing what product or service to promote. Your visitors must click on the affiliate ads in order for you to make some money. As there lots of them you also need to compare the affiliate programs on the market. What type of commission are they offering and what suits you and you site the best?

Promoting The Wrong Product

Many affiliates promote the wrong products on their sites. If it is web hosting your site is about you really should compare web hosting affiliate programs and choose between these. If the products you promote don’t match your site you won’t be able to promote their benefits in a good way.

Less is More

Some affiliates tend to think that the more products they promote the more money they’re going to make. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of spreading out advertising on many products from several different affiliate programs you should focus all your energy on a single ad. Doing so will immensely increase your possibilities to some of the affiliate money.

Affiliate of the Month is truly a high quality product. I have gained so much value from the videos and modules 2 & 3 of the training course. And, since the price is not unreasonable I’m not sure why it’s not converting. I had a constant flow of sales for Ewen’s previous product, Autopilot Profits, with about half the effort. And in my sincere opinion, AOTM offers much more. I checked it’s status on Clickbank and it appears to simply just not be doing well overall. It’s gravity is just over 66%, which is not very good at all for a fairly new product from a well respected Internet marketing guru. I’m not sure why people don’t seem too impressed by it at this point, but I’m not giving up on it just yet. I’m going to give it another couple of weeks. If I still don’t get any conversions and the product gravity continues to decline I will have to call the challenge a wash.

Any successful marketer will tell you that an important piece to the success puzzle is not putting all of your eggs in one basket. So, although Affiliate of the Month is NOT doing what I expected, it will not kill my Internet business. I have other promotions currently going on and other plans for the upcoming weeks. I am VERY excited about an upcoming product launch by Andrew Hansen. I have been beyond satisfied with Andrew’s other products: Niche Marketing on Crack and Article Speed Writing. I highly recommend both. Rarely do you find reports or ebooks that really provide you with a system that you can feel the power of immediately and can then put into action right away. I am creating a marketing strategy using his NMOC technique and the power of the Niche Inspector program to take my affiliate marketing efforts in a whole new direction. I will elaborate on that very soon…

Squidoo is part of the Web 2.0 craze that has taken the net by Storm. It’s especially powerful for Internet marketers because this particular social network allows you to openly advertise (unlike MySpace) and Squidoo has a high page rank with Google. So, you can market your products and/or opportunities using a little “parasite SEO” and get ranked on Google rather quickly. Pretty cool, right? All of this comes together in what he calls the “fixed affiliate promotion plan”. I touched on this in my last post… you remember… the one that sent me into a meltdown last Thursday night. I’ve got it together again, no worries. After getting myself back into the right mindset on Friday, I looked at the sample promotion plan again with a fresh pair of eyes. Not as bad as I originally thought! True, the sample Ewen provides does include a lot of work, but that is what the building of any business requires. Once I truly disected it, I realized that other than the actual number of articles it called for to be written, it really wasn’t too much more than what I had already been doing.

So, for my Affiliate of the Month challenge, I have created my very own strategic marketing plan. Using an advertising matrix strategy, my objective is to create a powerful long term promotion that will create Affiliate of the Month sales while building back links to InspiredEpiphany.com and increasing my list subscription rate all at the same time. My campaign will run for a full 85 days, which comes out to be the next 12 weeks or until June 30th. My marketing methods will include articles, forums, pay per click, email, online classifieds, Squidoo, Yahoo Answers, at least one press release, and blogging my journey here.

I have estimated and allotted 2 hours a day (6 days per week) with an estimated investment to be $565.00 for the total campaign. If I am able to achieve my goal of 1-5 sales per day, I will make a net profit of somewhere between $1,560 – $10,060. Now, this is just a summary of my strategic marketing plan and does not include all the daily (and weekly) tasks I have assigned myself. I will go into more detail about each of those as I delve deeper into my campaign. I must say, I am very excited about this challenge I’ve given myself. I’m gonna make the most of this!

So, when Affiliate of the Month launched this week I was very excited. I love Ewen Chia’s products because I have been consistently impressed with how much he provides for an often modest price. Affiliate of the Month (AOTM) did not disappoint me. I was completely surprised at the amount of new information he included [for a complete review of AOTM, please check out my Squidoo page]. One of the important steps Ewen emphasizes is the importance of planning. Specifically, he provides a sample of a “Fixed Affiliate Promotion Plan”. Now, being a person that thrives on organization, I was excited about this portion of the AOTM training course. Give me a plan and I am ready to roll. But wow… that sample plan blew my mind. Knowing how hard I am already working and how much more I would potentially have to do if I followed that sample completely overwhelmed me. I literally turned my computer off at 8pm! (I can’t remember the last time I’ve done that!) So, I spent all day today getting my head back on straight and reminding myself of my dedication and commitment.

So, I decided to rise to the challenge. I am going to create a modified version of the sample fixed affiliate promotion plan included in AOTM. As I work through the campaign I will post my progress and my results here. Wish me luck! I’m off to create my new fixed affiliate promotion plan…

No matter which category you fall into, I’d like to share some concepts with you that might make all the difference in the world to your future success. In fact, you just might learn from this article the one thing that helps you start earning real money.

It really all comes down these two mistakes that beginner’s make:

1. Promoting to many products at once (lack of focus), and..
2. Giving up too soon.

These two mistakes are related, and are actually self-reinforcing. It sounds obvious enough, but let me explain exactly how this scenario plays out.

Lack of Focus:

Experienced affiliate marketers do have the ability to promote several products, sometimes far afield from each other, at the same time. The reason they can do this is because they’d already learned and applied certain fundamental skills, and have developed a system for themselves which works to bring in sales consistently.

As a beginner, however, you’re still learning what works and what doesn’t. For that reason alone, you need a clearly defined testing ground – and this means limiting your promotion to just one product when you first start out.

Just imagine for a moment if you were in a laboratory. You’re working with a new chemical and need to determine its boiling point, solubility, molecular weight and so on.

Would it be quicker and easier for you to accomplish this by working with just that one chemical, or by juggling multiple, other chemicals all at the same time…starting one experiment and then rushing over to another one midway through?

Obviously, it would be easier to work with just the one chemical, right?

Well, the same is true for marketing. Just like the variables in your lab experiment, you’ve also got variables in every product promotion you undertake. The variables include things like traffic generation, conversion rates, advertising response rates and so on.

So, how much data do you want to juggle? Do you want to keep track of, say, Google Adwords performance for ONE e-book…or for a dozen of them spread across more than one niche?

This is where a lot beginners get themselves into a rut. They try to juggle all of this information at once, get overwhelmed by it and simply give up.

Giving Up Too Soon:

Ok, so, information overload hits, and you throw your hands in the air in surrender.

There’s no need to despair!

You can turn the situation around completely if you’ll just make a commitment to do the following three things:

1. Pick ONE niche market
2. Pick ONE product from that market
3. Use just that one niche product as your testing ground, in order to solidify your skills as an affiliate marketer.

You see, its a lot like learning to ride a bicycle as a kid. You start off with a tricycle, then move up to regular bike with training wheels and from there onto riding any bike you choose.

The same is true for learning how to promote products as an affiliate.

*Learn how to generate traffic on just one product
*Learn how to capture subscribers to your opt-in list for just one product
*Learn how to write advertisements and promotional copy for just one product
*Learn how to track your advertising links and conversion rates for just that one product….

….and THEN, you’ll be able to turn around and apply that knowledge to additional products, in different niches.

The key is to get some real results established in one place, and only then start building on that incrementally.

If you’ll follow even just this one simple rule, I promise you’ll see an increase in your commissions – and you can drop that ‘newbie’ label for the title of: Successful Affiliate Marketer!
